In Canton, Mississippi, on the morning of January 2, 1948, her parents and loved ones were graced with her arrival. She was born to the late Elsworth & Mary Flowers Sr., named in loving honor of her paternal aunt, Alexie, and her cherished grandmother, Leonora. From her very first breath, Alexis embodied the strength and grace of the women whose names she bore.
Alexis grew up surrounded by faith, family, and the enduring values of love, service, and resilience. A child of the South with a spirit as warm as a summer breeze, she carried her roots with pride throughout her life. Whether in her pursuit of education, her devotion to community, or the quiet, steadfast love she poured into her family, Alexis’s presence left an indelible mark on all who knew her.
She received early education through the Canton Public School system prior to the family of four relocating to Omaha, Nebraska, for a better life. There, she continued her education while earning accreditations through the Omaha Public School system, Metropolitan Community College, and the Barber and Beauty College of Professional Arts, where she became an instructor. She was also instrumental in the renaming of the school to David’s Head College of Hair Design.
Alexis worked in a variety of fields over the years, from a National Indemnity Insurance Company agent to co-owner of Murphy’s Tiny Tot Daycare. She also provided transportation for Omaha Public Schools and served as a dispatcher for Cox Communications. Even after retirement, Alexis’s heart of service led her to work at Heartland Workforce Solutions, where she assisted English- and Spanish-speaking job seekers in finding employment. She truly believed in empowering others, a value that was central to everything she did.
In 1976, Alexis found her spiritual home at Antioch Church of God in Christ, where she remained devoted until the end of her days. There, she flourished, serving in various capacities: as a member of the choir, the Mother’s Board, the Usher’s Board, and the Nurse’s Board, and as a Sunday School teacher. She also held leadership roles, including President of Women’s Day, First Lady’s Day, and the State Hospitality Department, and she proudly served as a District Missionary.
Known for her creativity and boundless energy, Alexis wrote and directed skits, plays, and interpretive performances that brought joy and meaning to her church family. Whether crafting, decorating, or baking, she approached every task with a spirit of joy and a heart full of love. Whatever her hands found to do, she did it with passion and a desire to bless those around her.
On May 16, 1975, Alexis married the love of her life, George Murph. Together, they shared over fifty years of love and memories. On Mother’s Day, May 11, 2025, having had her final conversation with George, Alexis hearkened to the call of the Lord, leaving this world to receive her eternal reward.
She was preceded in death by son: Willie Flowers; granddaughters: Nichelle, Arnita and Willie Flowers; parents: Elsworth & Mary Flowers, Sr.; siblings: George, David, Doris, Richardo and Douglas Flowers; sister-in-law: Mary Rose Brown; mother and father-in-law: Eddie & George Smith, Sr.
