Ava Rose Mills

May 10, 2000 — Sep 27, 2026

Ava will be deeply missed by her parents Richard and Lynn Mills, sister Emma Mills Strum and brother-in-law Jon Strum, grandparents Dee and Bill Boley, and other family, as well as the countless individuals whose lives she touched as a beloved friend, neighbor, and member of local groups and communities.

Most who knew her would describe Ava as a selfless, caring, brave person who led by example and welcomed -- but never pressured -- others to take action. She cared deeply for those who struggled, and continuously devoted her time, energy, and resources into helping relieve some of their hardships through local groups including Omaha Autonomous Action, a volunteer collective working to create community well-being through street kitchens, supply drives, and other forms of aid.

Her consistent drive to assist others culminated in her work as an EMT at Midwest Medical Transport, where she drove an ambulance in the overnight hours and provided medical care to people at critical moments. She was taking classes with the goal of becoming a nurse. She would have excelled at it because she truly lived to help.

Ava also loved to create. She was an accomplished artist who took part in Joslyn’s Kent Bellows mentorship program. She filled many sketchbooks and canvases with her art. She painted on walls at home, created tiny houses, and crafted homemade gifts for her family and friends.

Ava loved animals, especially her cat, Daisy. Cats (or any other animals) she encountered on the street were never ignored. She was always excited to meet a new furry friend whenever the opportunity presented itself. She also loved the outdoors, where she'd hike, camp, and simply enjoy nature alongside friends, family, and the wildlife who call it home.

Ava liked to fix things. She learned about automotive repair and worked at a garage for several years. She helped her family and friends with their cars: changing oil, installing new batteries, fixing flat tires.

Ava attended Kellom Elementary, King Science Center, Central High, and Metropolitan Community College.

Ava was a light for so many people around her. We miss her terribly, but we are glad for all of the joy she created in her time here with us. We are happy she has left us all with beautiful moments we can forever look back on and share with one another.

We will be providing details about a celebration of Ava’s life soon.

We would love to hear about the memories you have of Ava if you'd like to share them below.
