Hal was born in Grant Iowa and lived most of his young life in Red Oak. He graduated from Red Oak High School in 1955. He joined the Navy after High School and was stationed around the world as he was the commander's plane captain. After the Navy he moved back to Southwest Iowa, living in several homes. They finally settled in Florida. After Madelyn passed in 2017, Hal moved back to Glenwood, Iowa.
Hal loved to build things making many items for his children and friends. Hal also loved to fix anything broken. He did all his own car maintenance up until the months prior to his passing. He still travelled with his daughter. This year they went on a camping road trip going clear to Washington. Hal was very proud of being in the Navy so he visited every air museum that he could find. Hal was a member of the American Legion in Glenwood. He was also a long-time member of the Masons.
Hal was proceeded in death by his parents (Neil and Amy Halbert), his wife (Madelyn), his son (Neil), daughter Amy (Lushinsky-Bryson) and son-in-law Jeffery "JJ" Bryson. Hal is survived by his daughters Doreen Halbert and Lory Gamboa (Juan); son Chad Halbert (Amy Archer). Hal has ten grandchildren, and several great grandchildren.
Hal has been cremated and a Celebration of Life will be held in Red Oak on Memorial Day weekend. His flag will be dedicated at the Evergreen Cemetery during the Memorial Day ceremony.
