Cassandra Thomas

June 24, 1948 — February 25, 2024

Cassandra “Sandy” Inez Thomas (Melton), transitioned from this life on February 25, 2024, in her home in Omaha, Nebraska. Born on June 24, 1948, in Omaha, Nebraska, Sandy was a beloved member of her family, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Sandy's journey through life was one of dedication and resilience. She graduated from Central High School in 1966 and later pursued her passion for education at Nebraska Wesleyan University. Sandy's career spanned decades, during which she touched countless lives. Her influence was particularly felt in North Omaha, where she dedicated herself to serving her community at the Wesley House, the first social work center in Omaha, earning both admiration and respect from those she encountered.

In 1986, Sandy embarked on a new chapter in Denver, Colorado, alongside her three beloved children. She worked diligently at Karman Western Apparel, Inc. as an accounts receivable clerk for over a decade before continuing her career at Ford Motors in Omaha, where she remained until her well-deserved retirement in 2012.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Sandy had many other passions and pursuits. From her earliest days, she found joy in the rhythm of roller skating, often sharing laughter-filled outings with her siblings. Sandy's quick wit and natural charm endeared her to all, making her a treasured companion who effortlessly guided conversations with grace. Her love for card games was legendary, and she relished every opportunity to engage in spirited rounds of Bid Wiz and Tonk. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of life, she also found solace in quiet moments, losing herself in puzzles and the pages of her favorite books.

Sandy's memory will forever be cherished by those who were fortunate enough to share in her love and laughter. Sandy was preceded in death by her son, Derrick Melton, and her parents, Mae and Curtis Melton, Sr. She is survived by her loving children, Ruthie Pope (Reggie) and James Melton; her devoted siblings, Curtis Melton, Jr. (Brenda), William Melton (Neicy), Ellen Stafford, and Ronda Brown; a multitude of grandchildren (10), great-grandchildren (21), nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Let us take solace in the countless memories and laughs she leaves behind and find comfort in knowing that her spirit will continue to shine bright in the hearts of all who knew and loved her. May she rest in eternal peace.
