Donald “Big Papa” Christensen, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, surrounded by his cherished family. He was 72.
Donald was born in Omaha, Nebraska, to Herman Maurnece Christensen and Shirley Donna Lieser. He was a proud graduate of Boys Town in Omaha, a place that grounded him in the values of compassion, resolve, and generosity that marked his life.
Donald was blessed with six dear siblings—Bud, Cindy, Kate, Patti, Keith and Mike. Together, they forged countless memories, and some of his happiest hours were spent playing golf with his brothers, sharing laughter on and off the green.
In 1972, Donald married the love of his life, Debra K. Schwartz. For 54 beautiful years, their marriage stood as a testament to lasting love, partnership, and faith. Their family grew with the birth of their sons, Don Christensen Jr. and Derek Christensen. Donald endured the heartbreaking loss of Derek but remained a steadfast and loving presence for his family.
“Big Papa” took immense pride in his expanding family, delighting in the lives of his 3 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. He created a legacy not only in the generations that followed him but also in the bonds he nurtured with each one of them.
Donald had a zest for life and a playful spirit. On every other Sunday, he found pure joy adventuring through realms of imagination, playing Dungeons and Dragons with his son and a close circle of friends. His quick wit, warm laughter, and boundless generosity made him the heart of both his family and his friendships.
Donald’s absence will echo in our hearts forever. He leaves behind a lifetime of love, wisdom, and joy that will never be forgotten.
A memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd, 3809 North 90th Street, Omaha, on April 12, 2026, at 11 a.m. A wake will follow at 2512 Sharon Dr., Omaha, NE.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Donald’s GoFundMe page to assist with final expenses and moving costs for his devoted wife, Debra.
May his memory be a blessing.
