Elizabeth Carol Vanderhart, was born to Keith and Carol Kane in Des Moines Iowa, at a birth center, on August 30, 1988. She was carried into eternal comfort and glory at 37 years old July 6, 2026.
Early in her life she understood she was a helpless sinner, that could do nothing to earn salvation from sin and death. She was born again when she rested by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died for her sins and was raised again. Her trust in Christ alone was not only her unchanging assurance of eternal life, but became the fabric, that the tapestry of her life was so beautifully embroidered upon. A quote from her journal just a short time before she went home to heaven, reads as follows. "Upon a life I did not live, Upon a death I did not die, Upon His life, Upon His death, I stake my whole eternity!" He bore my guilt, not just my penalty! ". . . if as our Saviour said, 'It is finished', then there is nothing more to add."
She lived most of her early years in Council Bluffs, Iowa and then on the "Juniper Road" acreage near Underwood, Iowa spending days filled with playing with brothers and sisters, gaining homemaking experience, doing home-school-work, and Homeschool Band Practice. She became versed in many skills, among which were knitting (which she didn't care for), crocheting, sewing (which sometimes frustrated her), cooking, gardening and canning. In 2013 she moved with her family to the ALERT Academy in Big Sandy, Texas. There she volunteered in housekeeping, cleaning dorms and facilities, and became a master at folding fitted sheets 😊. She was also musically capable learning piano and clarinet, playing in the Home-School band. After moving to Texas she sang with the ALERT choir. Her beautiful, clear voice will be missed in the assembly meetings, at hymn sings, at family bible time and driving in the family car where she and Levi would often sing with the children.
Sometime around the age of 12, she had her first thoughts of going into midwifery as she read about the Hebrew midwives in Egypt, who feared the Lord and not Pharoah, when Pharaoh commanded the midwives to kill the Israelite sons. When she was old enough she took training to be a doula, and then apprenticed in Home-birth midwifery in Iowa and Nebraska as well as some in Texas after moving there. When opportunities for apprenticing in Texas became unattainable, she moved back to Missouri Valley, Iowa and then to Blair, Nebraska to continue her apprenticeship in the Nebraska-Iowa area. It was in this time that she met and got to know a young man who in her words, "is a lot like my Dad and brothers".
She was joined in Holy marriage, to Levi Vanderhart on May 11, 2018 in Big Sandy, Texas. Midwifery though, took second place to her new calling as a wife, and homemaker. But she did continue her calling of midwifery, attending her last birth two months before she went home. As her husband, Levi appreciated her strength in her constant support, her unwavering devotion, and the way she always made him feel attractive; doting on him as she poured herself into being his "help-meet." They lived in Blair, Nebraska for a time, then moved to Kennard, Nebraska and finally settled in Herman, Nebraska for the last four-and-half years. In that time they were blessed with three children; James, Jason, and Tabitha. Elizabeth loved being a mother. She would say, "midwifery is my calling, but being a mother is my dream." She was proud of each of her children and was always ready to talk about their achievements and capabilities.
She was in fellowship with the Christians in Blair, supporting her husband in his work in the assembly. She also participated in practical help such as cleaning the meeting building and occasionally taking a meal to another believer in need, until she entered into eternal worship in the presence of our Lord. Though very uncomfortable at the time, she last attended the Lord's supper eight days before she went home to heaven.
In April of 2024, Elizabeth was diagnosed with breast cancer. In the moments, hours, days, and months that followed there were times of soul searching like never before. There were ups and downs through it physically as well as spiritually. Through it all she was refined, and drawn closer to Christ, and brought to a greater sensitivity to God's will and working, and ultimately to a greater faith in Him. At times when there was no clear answer that she could see, she had to simply continue to rest in the truth that He knew, He cared and that He was able to do whatever His will was.
Elizabeth was a beloved wife, daughter, sister and Mommy. She is survived by her husband, Levi Vanderhart; children, James, Jason and Tabitha Vanderhart; parents, Keith and Carol Kane; siblings, Nathan (Amber) Kane, Rachel Kane, Richard (Kerali) Kane, Joanna Kane, Samuel Kane, Andrew Kane; and many other loving family and friends.
Some of the verses read with Elizabeth in the hours before she went home:
Romans 8:28, 32, 38-39. "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Other portions read included Luke 1:34-55, John 17:1-26.
