Ingrid Marie (Schüpfer) Scurlock was born on July 20th, 1950, in a Displaced Persons (refugee) Camp in the vicinity of Linz, Austria. Her parents, Andreas & Theresia (Fischler) Schüpfer had four children.
From the DP camp, the family moved to Oberhausen in the Ruhrpott region of northern Germany where Ingrid was raised. Growing up, she also spent many summers with her favorite Aunt Mitzi in the Swabian region of southern Germany. After finishing primary school in Oberhausen, she started an apprenticeship for nursing.
She moved to Alzey in the heart of Germany’s famous Rheinhessen wine region in 1969 where she continued her nursing apprenticeship. She was said to be “tireless in caring for and looking after her patients and was very popular with the patients and their families.”
Ingrid was adventurous…after meeting a young American G.I. she traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, more than 4,000 miles from home in what would be the beginning of a new life in the United States. She married Frederick G. Scurlock in 1972 and they raised two loving children together. She could be remarkably stubborn at times; she even kicked cancer’s ass in 1985. Ingrid loved to travel. She took her family all over Europe and to many US states, and her journeys included places like Mexico, Turkey, Tunisia, and Sioux City. In recent years, as her health made travel difficult, she told everyone she saw “I need a vacation” and how she wanted to go back to Chicago or San Diego, both of which she remembered so fondly.
Ingrid was quite a jokester and had a knack for making people laugh; whether it was at her or with her she didn’t really care. Along with the jokes, she gave a lot of good advice, unfortunately most of which is unfit to print. Her many hobbies and interests included ceramics, gardening, flowers, nature, and being anywhere on the water. She adored animals and had a weakness for chocolate. She was notably an excellent cook, a fact to which our childhood friends would certainly attest.
She was a second mother to our friends (and dogs!), and her grandchildren were her pride and joy (Adam is only a little bitter about being usurped in that category).
She is survived by her siblings, Helene (Heli), Johanna (Hanna), and Andreas (Andy); children, David, Adam and his wife Cathy; grandchildren, Andreas, Melina, Jacob, Josh, and Justin; and a shitload of recipes she clipped but never made, which we’re not sure what to do with now. If you would like one*, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Family, friends, and others whose lives Ingrid touched are invited to the Good Shepherd Funeral Home located at 3809 N 90th Street in Omaha, from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Friday, October 11, 2024 to reminisce, grieve, support each other, or just chat.
(* One of the recipes…the grandchildren are negotiable.)
