James William Fisher, lovingly known as "Papaw" by his grandchildren passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025 at the age of 79. A believer in Christ, proud veteran, devoted family man and friend, James lived a life marked by service, integrity, and unconditional love.
Born on August 15, 1945 in Omaha, NE James answered the call of duty at a young age, serving in the United States Army in Vietnam from September 1965 to June 1968. His years in service shaped the values he carried throughout his life.
James was a born again Christian serving the Lord and sharing the gospel with all who would listen. His Bible was often found by his side. John 3:16 was a verse that he held close to his heart. He was a member of the Christian Brotherhood, with friendships he made that bonded them together for a lifetime.
James had a deep love for his children, grandchildren, feeding the stray cats, visiting the Home Cafe and rooting for the LSU Tigers. Birthdays were important to him and he always shared his thoughtful birthday wishes by serenading his loved ones with 'Happy Birthday'. He was a horrible driver, but ironically was the best driving instructor. At times we thought he was auditioning for a stuntman gig.
He will be remembered for his warm hugs, quick wit, and unwavering support. His heritage lives on in the lives he touched and the stories we will continue to share.
James is survived by his children Joy (Ladd) Naquin, Jessica (Gabriel) Perez, Joel (Sarah) Fisher, Jillian Fisher, Jordan (Nia) Fisher; grandchildren Morgan, Luke, Taylor, Zoe, Asher, Evangel, Jude, Emma, Ian, Cameron, Kennedy, McCarley, Holden, Gavin, Lilly, and Liam; adopted grandchildren Adrianna and Andres; sister Loretta Fisher; brothers Lanny Fisher and Paul Fisher; close friend Cathy Wright; and nieces, nephews, and other family.
He was preceded in death by his parents William Leighton and Charlotte Opal "Maggie" Fisher.
A celebration of James' life will be held on May 19, 2025 at Grace Bible Church in Bellevue. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his honor to the Josie Harper Hospice House.
We would like to thank Dr. Burdorf, along with the entire LVAD team and staff at University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the loving, compassionate, phenomenal staff at the Josie Harper Hospice House.
Rest easy, Papaw. Your service, faith and love will never be forgotten.
