James Edward Washington, 80, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2025, in Omaha, Nebraska. Born on October 24, 1945, in Omaha, James spent his life deeply rooted in the community where he was born and raised.
A proud graduate of Omaha Nebraska Technical High School, James completed his studies on June 11, 1965. He later pursued his passion for communication and media by attending the Career Academy in Radio Broadcasting, graduating on October 2, 1971. His interest in broadcasting reflected a lifelong appreciation for storytelling and connection.
In February 1966, James enlisted in the United States Army. During his service at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, he met Patricia—the mother of his children—marking the beginning of a meaningful chapter in his life. He served honorably until June 1968 and received an honorable discharge.
James was a devoted father to his daughters Patricia Shepherd (Washington), Venilia Smith Washington and Keisha Smith (Washington). Through them, he was blessed with grandchildren: Mario, Ramone, Stevie, Markeshia, and Shareka and also a host of great grandchildren. His love for family extended across generations and branches of the family tree.
He is remembered fondly by his siblings: Larry F. Washington and his spouse Caroline and their children Lisa and Katherine; Carl Lee Washington and his spouse Virginia and their children Carleen Sturdivant, Hank Sturdivant, Carla Washington, and Carl Washington; as well as Lorraine Touray (Washington) and her spouse Ebrima Touray.
James was preceded in death by his beloved mother Hattie Doris Bryant (January 1999), father Edward Lee Washington; sister Loretta Tolbert (Stevenson); brother Howard Stevenson; niece Cynthia Jackie Grayer (Stevenson); and nephew Howard Stevenson.
He also leaves behind cherished members of the extended Stevenson family: Paulette Sandra Taylor (Stevenson) and her spouse Larry Taylor; Belinda Hunter (Stevenson) and her children Damien, Demetra, Cleo, and Jannae; Debra Stevenson and her daughter Jonetta.
James’s life was marked by dedication—to his country through military service, to his craft through education in broadcasting, and most importantly to his family. His legacy lives on through those who knew him best.
May his memory bring comfort to all who loved him.
Services will be held on Thursday (11/20/2025) at Good Shepherd Funeral Home - 90th St. Chapel. Visitation from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM with Funeral Service at 12:00 PM. Burial with military honors will be at 2:30 PM at Omaha National Cemetery, 14250 Schram Rd, Omaha NE 68138.
