Jo Evelyn Mitchell was born in Omaha, Nebraska on November 19, 1945, to Eddie and Gertrude Mitchell, who preceded her in death.

Jo graduated from Technical High School in Omaha. Jo gave her life to the Christ at an early age. Jo loved the Lord. Jo worked at Mutual of Omaha for over 45 years. She was the voice of Mutual of Omaha. Jo was a member of Grace Tabernacle Church for many years (Bishop Bradford). She later became a member of Smith Temple (Dr. Charles E. Smith), (Pastor Terrance Barmore). She attended Shiloh Church of God and Christ (Paster Wayne Davis). Jo was also a Missionary. Jo loved to pray and read her Bible. She loved to go junking, as she called it, going on her travel. She also loved sewing and cooking. Her peach cobblers and German chocolate cakes are what people would ask her to make for them all the time

Although Jo had no children of her own, she was blessed to raise two of her nieces (Victoria Conway-Pickens and Tracie Mitchell). Victoria's children, Da'Vion Conway, and little Victoria Pickens called Jo, "Nana." She also helped her brother, Eric, in raising his daughter, Sienna Jo Mitchell.
