Judy Kaye Franklin

January 31, 1944 — April 12, 2026

Judy Kaye Franklin, age 82, passed away on April 12, 2026, in Omaha, Nebraska, after spending the past two years living with her daughter and son-in-law. Through cancer and all, Judy lived life on her own terms right up to the last breath.

Judy was raised in Wallace, Nebraska. The open road, but more specifically, the open skies summoned her early from a traditional life. Her odyssey officially took off when she left Nebraska for Chicago, where she built a remarkable 36-year career with Northwest Airlines. Even after retiring from Northwest, she took roles as a makeup counter maven and paraeducator. Fittingly, Judy spent much of her life in flight, always moving, learning, imagining, and manifesting the next possibility.

Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Lauren Franklin. She is survived by her daughter, Emma Franklin (Daniel Willis); her niece, Kari (Ryan) Finley; her brother Dean (Karen) Franklin; her devoted four-legged sidekick of 17 years, Sadie; and a constellation of family and friends gathered from every city and chapter of life.

Judy lived out loud and without apology. She called Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle, Wallace, and Omaha home at different times, collecting stories, friendships, and mischief everywhere she went. She was eccentric, artistically inclined, and just rebellious enough to keep the moment interesting. If there was a boundary, Judy danced right over it, and she wasn’t shy about calling things as she saw them.

Her spirit emerged in moments both big and small. Following a major surgery a few years ago, a well-meaning surgeon politely asked if he could examine her belly after the procedure, Judy giggled and exclaimed, “no!” capturing her grit, humor, and refusal to be anything but herself. Whether it was getting her first tattoo at 73, reinventing her style with ever-changing hair colors and clothes, or fully embracing the awe of online shopping, Judy lived her mantra: “you’re never too old.”

At 55, Judy embarked on one of the most defining choices of her life when she adopted her daughter, Emma (at age 3), from China. She raised Emma to be an audacious and inquisitive chatterbox, mirroring the very qualities she embodied every day.

Judy never met a stranger. She felt magic in human connection, a love of giving, and an endless curiosity about people and the world. Travel, conversation, politics, and dogs were among her greatest passions, all of which she pursued with enthusiasm and flair. Judy will be remembered as a rule-breaker, a visionary, and a free spirit who refused to live an ordinary life. Her unmistakable spark and individuality will leave a lasting imprint on everyone who knew her. It feels only right to envision her now, still soaring, high above the clouds in a Boeing 747, chasing yet another horizon.

A celebration of Judy’s life will be held from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. on April 25, 2026, at the Legion Hall in Wallace, Nebraska.
