In Loving Memory of Kristy Louise Mitchell (Shumaker)“Kris” / “Krissy” / Nana / Aunt Sis
Kristy Louise Mitchell, lovingly known as Kris, Krissy, and most affectionately as "Nana," passed away on July 21, 2025, in her hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 67. A celebration of her life will be held on Wednesday, July 30, from 4:00–6:00 p.m. at Good Shepherd Funeral Home, followed by a pasta dinner at the IBEW Hall from 6:00–8:00 p.m.
Kristy was born on February 16, 1958, in Omaha to Andrew Shumaker and Barbara Redden. A proud graduate of South Omaha High School, she continued her education and earned her associate degrees, always encouraging others to never stop learning.
Kristy worked for many years as a dedicated bookkeeper for Baker's Grocery Store. She was known for her strong work ethic, unmatched organization, and her quick wit in and out of the office.
In 1979, she married Harry Louis Varvil in California, and together they welcomed two children: Bradley Varvil and Stacy (Varvil) Glynn. After their divorce in 1989, Kristy later found love again and married Timothy Mitchell in 1997 in Omaha. From this union, she had her youngest daughter, Kymberley Mitchell. Though the marriage ended in 2013, her love for her family never wavered.
Kristy was a proud and loving Nana to five grandchildren, who were the light of her life: Tristen Glynn, Tucker Varvil, Hannah Glynn, Logan Glynn, and Ryder Varvil. She deeply cherished her role as Nana and made sure each of them felt special and deeply loved.
She is survived by her three beloved children:
And her cherished grandchildren: Tristen, Tucker, Hannah, Logan, and Ryder.
Kristy also leaves behind four brothers, two sisters, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who all adored her. She was the family’s favorite sister and aunt — a title she wore proudly and effortlessly. She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew Shumaker and Barbara Redden, and her dear brother, John.
Kristy had a zest for life. She loved crafting, fishing, gardening, baking, and cooking. Her famous fried chicken and macaroni and cheese were legendary at every family gathering. She never missed a chance to share a delicious homemade meal. She also had an undeniable love for chocolate, a sweet indulgence that brought her joy in every bite. She was the sassy, strong, take-no-nonsense kind of woman who was also fiercely kindhearted, nurturing, and deeply loving. She had the unique gift of making everyone feel important and unconditionally loved.
Over the past year, Kristy courageously battled cancer, fighting with strength and grace all the way to the end. Her resilience and love for her family never faded, even in her hardest moments.
Her memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her. She was truly one of a kind — a strong woman, a loving mother, a devoted Nana, and the glue that held so many together.
Rest peacefully, Kris. We love you more than words can say.
