Larry Holmes Sr. was born on May 31, 1942, in Omaha, NE to the parents of Frank and Floneller Holmes. Larry was one of fourteen (14) children born to this union. He graduated from Omaha Technical High School in Omaha, NE in 1961.
Larry saw the girl of his dreams, Martha J. Adams, as a teenage boy. He laid eyes on her with every intention of being with her for the rest of his life. He went on to marry the love of his life on Aug 17, 1963. To this union, three wonderful children were born: Larry Jr., Derrick Dwayne and Kizzetta Jo'van. Larry worked tirelessly to care for his wife and his children. His life goal was to keep family at the forefront of his life, keeping this promise to the very end.
Larry has made a lasting impact on his community. At home, in the workplace and on the street, Larry was hilarious and witty with an incredibly big heart. Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman. Whenever he had an opportunity, he was on the bank catching fish. When not on the pond, he could be seen casting his imaginary lure into the air, smiling with excitement as he pulled out the "big one", and all in his presence watching in wonder and anticipation.
About his faith. Larry accepted Christ in 1971. Until the Lord called him home, he never wavered in his faith. He was steadfast, and patiently waited for the Lord to escort him to glory. Larry was a deacon for New Bethel Church of God in Christ for 42 years. Deacon Holmes served all his life as faithful keeper of God's house. There was not a single responsibility that he did not handle with meticulous care. He wanted nothing more than to serve Christ thru his duties as a deacon and saint of God.
Larry was known for his love of all things western. From cowboy boots, to holsters and Stetson hats, he was a true cowboy at heart. Larry was a man's man! He strived to be exemplary at everything he did. He embodied loyalty, dedication to all and would fight for the underdog.
Deacon Holmes was immensely loved. Larry was a rock for his children with his stick-to-itiveness. He was proud of his children, and they equally shared the same affection for their dad. He was strong man with a kind heart. Larry said what he meant and meant what he said. He would help anyone who needed him, he never wanted to see a loved one struggle. He imparted to his family the importance of have a strong relationship with Christ.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents: Frank and Floneller Holmes. Sisters: Clara Rodgers, Louise Secret, Floneller Bolden. Brothers: Jesse Watson, Cal J. Holmes Sr. and Edward Holmes Sr.
Deacon Larry Holmes, Sr. departed this earthly life on May 26, 2023, at the age of 80 years old. He trusted God with all his heart and served faithfully till his last breath.
Larry leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 59 years, Martha Jean Holmes; his children: Larry Holmes Jr., Derrick D. Holmes and Kizzetta J. Holmes; Sisters, Lucille Boults, Ruby Williams, Sandra Smith and Siny Bailey (Randy); Family matriarch Dr. Claudia Wells Hamilton (Edward). Eight (8) grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, New Bethel Church of God In Christ family and a host of other relatives and close friends.
