It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leona Newson, a beloved mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, who departed this world on October 10, 2025, at the age of 61. Leona’s life was one of love, perseverance, and boundless dedication. Her presence will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Leona was born on November 18, 1963, and grew up in Omaha, Nebraska. She attended Lothrop Elementary, Horace Mann Middle School, Northwest High School, and Dominican High School, where she laid the foundation for her future successes. Always committed to learning and self-improvement, Leona later earned multiple certifications in cosmetology, dentistry, and a business degree from Metropolitan Community College. Her professional journey was diverse and inspiring. Her expertise, kindness, and genuine care for others left a lasting impact on those she served.
However, Leona’s greatest joy and most profound accomplishment was being a mother and grandmother. She raised six beautiful children—Tasha Fraser (Joseph), Lamar Newson, BreNae Payne (Cortney), Llyia McKell, Keyaira McKell, and Houston McKell IV—whom she adored and cherished. Leona’s love for her children was unwavering, and she dedicated herself to providing them with a strong foundation of love, wisdom, and support. She worked tirelessly to ensure they had every opportunity to thrive and always reminded them to be proud of who they are and pursue their dreams with passion.
In addition to being a devoted mother, Leona’s kindness and generosity extended to everyone she met. She was known for her ability to make others feel seen and valued, offering a listening ear or a word of encouragement when it was needed most. Her vibrant spirit and quick wit brought joy to all who crossed her path. Whether at work, home, or in her community, Leona made a difference in the lives of many through her warmth and positive energy.
Leona leaves behind her six children, along with many beloved family members and friends. She is also remembered by her siblings Leo Newson Jr., Lenora Brass (Bobby), Tiwana Robinson (George), Glen Lindsay Jr., and Linette Lindsay; nieces Keonna Lindsay, Daizhana Lindsay, and Breonna Lindsay-McQueen; nephews Terrell Knight, Lester Lewis III, Bobby Brass Jr., and Collin Lindsay; great nephews; Jeremiah Brass, Daezhaun Lindsay; grandchildren Edwin Cintron III, Jaiel McKell, Ty’Lan McKell, and Cartier Payne; and countless others whose lives were touched by her presence. Leona is preceded in death by her beautiful mother Verna Louise Lindsay (stepfather Glenn Lindsay Sr.), father Leo Newson, youngest sister Linette Lindsay, and love of her life Houston McKell III.
A celebration of Leona’s life will take place on October 24, 2025, at Good Shepherd Funeral Home (3809 N 90th St), where family and friends will gather to honor her memory, share stories, and celebrate the beautiful life she lived. Leona may no longer walk among us, but her spirit will forever remain in our hearts. Her love, strength, and generosity will continue to inspire those who knew her. Rest in peace, Leona, and know that your memory will live on in all who loved you.
