Michael Glen "Fergie" Ferguson
February 15, 1948 - October 21, 2026
Michael Glen Ferguson, affectionately known as "Mike" or "Fergie," passed away on Wednesday October 21 2026, at the age of 78, surrounded by his loving family.
Mike was born on February 15, 1948, in Central City, Nebraska, to Glenn and Rosemary (Kahler) Ferguson. He spent his early childhood in Silver Creek, Nebraska, attending country school before moving to Clarks in the fourth grade. He graduated from Clarks High School in 1966. Following graduation, Mike worked alongside his father on the family farm before enrolling at Kearney State College.
In 1968, Mike was drafted into the United States Army, proudly serving his country for two years, including service in Vietnam. His patriotism and dedication to his fellow veterans remained an important part of his life. Upon returning home, he began a 37-year career with the Veterans Health Administration in Grand Island, Nebraska, where he continued his lifelong commitment to serving those who served our country.
On April 8, 1972, Mike married Marcia Reeves, beginning a beautiful marriage that spanned 54 years. Together, they made their home in Grand Island, where they raised their two daughters, Michelle and Mandy, and built a lifetime of cherished memories.
Mike was a devoted husband, proud father, and loving grandfather. Family was always at the center of his world, and nothing brought him greater joy than watching his children and grandchildren grow. He was a constant presence on the sidelines, supporting his daughters throughout their years in athletics, volunteering his time as a coach, and later becoming one of his grandchildren's biggest fans at their school activities and sporting events.
A lifelong Nebraska Cornhusker fan, Mike especially enjoyed the glory days of Husker football in the 90's when he and Marcia attended countless home and away games. His love of sports extended beyond being a spectator, as he enjoyed participating in numerous recreational sports throughout his life.
Mike was deeply committed to his fellow veterans and was a lifetime member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, with involvement in the Grand Island and Polk, Nebraska, posts. He proudly served as an American Legion commander and dedicated countless hours volunteering, including at the VA hospital and Nebraska Veterans Home. His service to veterans did not end with his military duty or retirement; it was a lifelong passion.
Following his retirement from the VA, Mike stayed busy working various part-time jobs, not necessarily because he needed to, but because he genuinely enjoyed being around people. He had a gift for striking up conversations, making connections, and finding friendship wherever he went.
Mike loved music, dancing, Frank Sinatra, Nebraska football, and above all, his family and his country. He took tremendous pride in being an American and in the life he and Marcia built together. Whether cheering from the sidelines, enjoying a favorite song, or simply spending time surrounded by those he loved, Mike knew how to appreciate life's special moments.
One of his favorite sayings was, "It doesn't get any better than this." For Mike, those words reflected the joy he found in the simple things: family and friends gathered together, a good game, great music, and the company of people he loved.
Mike is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Marcia; his daughters, Michelle (Rob) Bartz and Mandy Ferguson (Chris Drake); his grandchildren, Hailey Bartz, Emily Bartz, Allison Bartz (fiancé Jacob Michalski) Landon Bartz, Evan Drake, Jackson Drake (fiancée Brooke Leise), and Rachael Drake; his sister, Vickie Ferguson; and his brother and sister-in-law, Ric and Nancy Ferguson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Rosemary Ferguson; his father- and mother-in-law, Barton and Barbara Reeves; and his brother-in-law, Michael Reeves.
A memorial celebration of Mike's life will be held at a later date in Grand Island, Nebraska.
