Raymond A. Powell Jr. was born February 28, 1939 to Evalee Johnson Powell and Raymond A. Powell Sr.
Raymond was baptized at an early age at Salem Baptist Church and attended Long School Elementary and Tech High School (‘57) in Omaha, NE.
On June 28, 1959, Raymond was united in marriage to Charlena M. McCants. To this union, two children were born: Raymond A. Powell III and Deanna L. Powell.
During Raymond’s lifelong career, he worked at Belman Ice Company, Red Top Inc., and Campbell Soup Company. Raymond also coached basketball at Bryant Center and shined shoes at his uncle Hardy “Bean” Meeks’ Deluxe Shoe Shop on 24th St. He went on to work for the City of Omaha’s Street Maintenance Department as a truck driver for 31 years, retiring in 2001.
In his spare time, Raymond enjoyed watching sports, shining shoes on the side, playing solitaire, watching old cowboy movies, listening to music, baking cakes, adding to his model car collection, and giving advice and opinions (always with love) to both family and friends. His biggest joy in his life was his family—his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and siblings. He also deeply adored Mickey Mouse.
Raymond A. Powell Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond A. Powell Sr. and
Evalee Powell; brothers Frankie, Gary, Edward, and Larry Powell; and sisters ThelmaJean Powell, Sandra Brown, and JoAnn Cole.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his son, Raymond A. (Sharon Gordon) Powell; his daughter, Deanna L. (Andrew B. Perry Sr.) Powell; his grandchildren, Christopher Raymond (Kristen Chase) Powell, Kevin James (Samantha Kirby) Powell, and Ariana Rae Powell; seven great-grandchildren; his brothers Ricky and Stevie Powell; his sisters Connie Powell and JoyceTaylor; his dear friend Ivy Hill; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
