Celebrating the Life of Sheryl Lynn Stennis "Lynnie"

Sheryl Lynn Stennis, affectionately known as “Lynnie” or “Sheryl Lynn”, was called home to glory on Monday, November 17, 2025. Although this was unexpected for us, we know this was God’s timing. Lynnie was born in Omaha, Nebraska on July 9, 1959, to James and Phyllis McGary.

She was the baby of the bunch and loved going to church with Granny and her family every Sunday. She loved life, her family, Keith Sweat (her favorite RnB artist) Fred Hammond and Kirk Franklin (two of her favorite Gospel artists). Lynnie accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and was baptized by water during her childhood and received the Holy Spirit when she rededicated herself in her mid-30s.

Sheryl Lynn graduated from Omaha North High in 1978. Following high school, she worked as a dental assistant and started a family, she married David Stennis in 1990 and worked as a Certified Nursing Asssistant at several nursing homes and private duty. After raising her three girls, she returned to school and received her Dental Hygienist Certification from Vatterott College. Sheryl Lynn wore many hats, mom, cook, hairstylist, seamstress, entertainer, auntie, cousin, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, and she loved them all. She had a heart for God and showed God’s love to everyone she encountered, she gave what she could when she could to whomever needed it, she had an infectious smile to match her great big heart.

A few memorable things about Sheryl Lynn, she kept her house clean, down to the base boards and she did not play about that, or running in and out during the summer time; she was the family hair stylist for her sister, Sheila’s girls and would always do their perms because she had that magic touch of getting them edges extra straight. Nobody could make green bean casserole like Lynnie that is for certain. And nobody knew how to get ready for a night on the town at the Backstreet Lounge quite like her either, blasting Keith Sweat’s “Make it Last Forever”, while she was getting ready to step out with her besties Roxy and Regina.

Sheryl Lynn is preceded in death by her grandparents Mattie & John Sims and Leo McGary & Jessie Marie Delespine, her parents, James & Phyllis McGary, her brother James “Jimmy” McGary Jr., uncles Larry & Donald Sims and great uncle Leo Hawkins, and cousins, Brenda Kay, Leon, Donald Jr. & Johnny Sims. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her 3 daughters, Jamesa, Mia & Cheyna; 13 grandchildren NaTae’a, Tyshae, Ma’Raya, A’Shya, ShiLynn, Gregory, Anthony, Sariye, Elijah, Dre’Dyn, Ahnesty, Syrie and Samya; 3 great grandchildren Ariya, Amarah & AshTyn; brother Phillip (Marilyn) & sister Sheila; all of Omaha, Nebraska; close friends Roxy and Regina (Omaha); ex-husband David Stennis (Omaha) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Lynnie will truly be missed.
