Shirley Sackett

August 15, 1936 — August 18, 2025

Shirley Hughes Sackett, known affectionately as Gigi by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025 in Elkhorn, Nebraska. Born in London, England on August 15, 1936, she lived a life rooted in love, family, and a deep sense of home. She had an eventful childhood, including being bombed out of her home twice as a child and being evacuated to live with strangers in the countryside during World War II.

Shirley's adventures continued into her adult life, when she moved thousands of miles away from everything she knew to marry Richard Sackett in Lincoln, Nebraska on August 21, 1957. She built a life alongside him, as they navigated countless moves and foreign assignments for his career in the Air Force. Despite the many places they lived, Shirley ensured their home, no matter where it was, remained a sanctuary for family, friends, and single airmen who had no family nearby.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Richard and son Allen. She is survived by her son Don (Denise) Sackett, daughter Helen (John) Hoer, daughter Susan Sackett, daughter-in-law Michelle Sackett, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Known for her hospitality, Shirley's home was a haven for friends and family alike. Her love for hosting was evident in the many holiday celebrations in her home, where decorations were abundant for every season. At Christmas, her home became a Winter Wonderland that left children and adults alike in awe, and her meals were lovingly served to family, friends, and anyone else welcomed into her home.

Her hands were rarely still, whether it was baking, decorating, crafting, or moving furniture. Even in her later days, she always had the energy for thrifting, trips to the casino, or playing on her iPad for hours on end. She told the best stories, and she entertained all those fortunate enough to have her share. Beneath her demure demeanor, she had a spark that surprised those who didn't know her well. Whether it was her many practical jokes, wicked sense of humor, or watching her dance around to Bruno Mars while cooking dinner. Her legacy will live on in the hearts she touched, the traditions she created, and the love she so freely gave.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, August 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Brookestone Meadows, 600 Brookstone Plaza, Elkhorn, Nebraska. An open house will be held immediately following the service until 1:00 p.m. Please feel free to wear something bright and cheerful to reflect Shirley's personality. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to The Gary Sinise Foundation in Shirley's memory.
