Verna Rena
Cox
September 23, 1980 – March 20, 2026
Verna Rena Cox, maiden name Gray, 45, passed away on March 20, 2026, in Omaha, Nebraska, in a sudden and unexpected loss.
Verna was born on September 23, 1980, in Brooklyn, New York, to Cynthia Gibbs and Vernon Gibbs Sr. She was raised in Williamston and Jamesville, North Carolina, where she developed a love for sports—especially basketball—and built lifelong connections with family and friends.
She attended Jamesville High School and continued her education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Verna dedicated over two decades of her life to retail and customer service, leaving a lasting impact everywhere she worked. Her career highlights included serving as a District Asset Protection leader with Walmart, a Store Manager with Home Depot, and most recently as a Customer Care Payment Manager with Toast. She was known for her leadership, work ethic, and genuine care for both customers and her teams.
Verna was the kind of person who showed up with a smile no matter the situation. She would give you the shirt off her back without hesitation. She carried the heart of so many of our best moments and had a way of lighting up any room—yet could also be found quietly bringing comfort to others in their hardest times. Her love for her family was unmatched.
Above all, Verna loved her sons more than life itself. She was endlessly proud of them and poured everything she had into raising and supporting them. Her mother, Cynthia, was her best friend, and their bond was one of deep love, respect, and connection. She also shared a special relationship with her brother, Vernon Jr., cherishing the time they spent together.
In her free time, Verna loved cooking for her sons, watching her favorite BET series, enjoying movies with her boys, and cheering them on at their sporting events. She also enjoyed online shopping and creating meaningful moments with her family.
Verna is survived by her loving sons, Jason Jr. (22), Caden (16), and Braden (16); her mother, Cynthia Gibbs; and her brother, Gunner Gibbs.
She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten. Her legacy will live on through her sons and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness, strength, and unwavering love.
