Vicki Lynn Pieken Carlson, 43, of the Omaha area, was born in 1982 to Don and Ruth Pieken. She was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant and remained active in the Lutheran church throughout her life, participating in youth groups, serving as a Sunday School teacher and children’s choir director, and volunteering in numerous church roles over the years.
She was educated in Omaha Public Schools and graduated from Benson High School. She later attended the University of Nebraska–Omaha. Vicki worked in customer service and research roles throughout her life and was employed at Data Axle for nearly two decades. Wherever she worked, she was known for remembering names and faces and for making people feel recognized and valued.
On March 28, 2015, she was united in marriage to Jon Carlson. Together they built a home grounded in faith, humor, and simple joys. Their daughter, Amy, was the center of Vicki’s world.
From a young age, Vicki showed both courage and compassion. As a child, she improvised her own roller-skating strategy with memorable results. As a young adult, she walked away from a farm adventure with stitches and a story. That spirited determination remained part of who she was.
Her love of Disney and theme parks became part of her family story. During an early proposal attempt on The Little Mermaid ride, her delight in the experience delayed the question until a second ride later that evening, when she happily said yes and began a new adventure.
Vicki was deeply devoted to family. She comforted her sister as a child, faithfully supported her goddaughter and nephew at church and school events, and spent many cherished evenings attending community theater productions with her grandmother.
Over the years, she lovingly crafted more than one hundred counted cross-stitch pieces to mark births and weddings for family and friends. She was a connector, maintaining relationships across distance and through seasons when gathering in person was not possible.
Vicki was a devoted and protective mother, often called a “Mama Bear.” She delighted in sharing with Amy her love of reading, movie nights, zoos and museums, and all things Disney, especially the Muppets and Kermit the Frog. Their home was filled with laughter, collections, and Saturday rhythms that balanced slow mornings with afternoon adventures.
Vicki was known for her kindness, loyalty, and thoughtfulness, someone who made people feel remembered.
She is survived by her husband, Jon Carlson; daughter, Amy; parents, Don and Ruth Pieken; sister and brother-in-law, Jennie and Paul Luebbe; parents-in-law, Paul and Karen Carlson; sister- and brother-in-law, Ann and John Wyatt; and her beloved nieces and nephews.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Memorial contributions may be made to Amy’s education fund, honoring Vicki’s devotion to her daughter and her future. Gifts may be made at: https://tinyurl.com/2s6er3wv
